Are you ready to usher in 2017 with excitement and a bright outlook on life? December is the perfect time to congratulate yourself on making it through 2016 and to plan the changes that will make you feel incredible in 2017!

When you find yourself unhappy with your day-to-day, it can be hard to admit that you need a change. But the same patterns of behaviour that have led you to unhappiness won’t magically start to motivate you in the future. So, to make 2017 a year of feeling good every day, the first step is to find what exactly needs changing in your everyday life.

After you’ve looked at your daily routine in the smallest detail and noticed what parts of it don’t serve you anymore, imagine your best possible day. Screw anyone’s telling you “yoga is the thing right now” or “you can’t feel good unless you cut sugars from your diet” – they’re not in the same environment as you, feeling what you’re feeling, and facing your problems. They can’t possibly know what a good life is like for you. But you know! So, what does it take for you to go to bed happy, knowing you’ve had an awesome day? 

And the last step in the shift to a happy everyday life is to plan for the changes to go through with them. The last weeks of December are perfect for planning what you want to begin in January – try it! For example, if you want to have more free time with your kids in 2017, mark it throughout your brand new calendar. And don’t forget to ask them what they look forward to doing in 2017 – if you start planning the activities now, you will already feel excited for this change coming. And to solidify this shift even before you started, add something tangible to the mix – for example, if your kids want to play board games with you, you can get one for Christmas and look forward to the warm evenings you’ll spend together playing it!

This is just one example – you can apply the same technique to anything. Say, if you want to pick up a relaxing hobby in 2017 to get your mind off stressful work in the evenings, you could look at knitting tutorials on YouTube and get yourself beautiful yarn with needles already in December to go through with this fun new addition to your daily routine in 2017.

Whatever you do, as long as you know it will make you feel better on the day-to-day and doesn’t harm anybody, it’s a great way to go. Ultimately, this change is about setting out a purpose for yourself, even before the New Year begins, to be happy in 2017 – and the new activity or habit is just your own tangible way of showing commitment to this resolution every day.
