Don’t go chasing someone else’s dreams

No one is forcing you to run after what someone else wants – your mom, your husband or your peers – but sometimes it feels like it. Break free from the pointless race for approval and choose your own destination yourself!

No one is forcing you to run after what someone else wants – your mom, your husband or your peers – but sometimes it feels like it. Break free from the pointless race for approval and choose your own destination yourself!

We go day after day surrounded by multiple screens, each telling us what’s “hot” this season – what to wear, where to go, what to do. It may not seem like too big an influence, but when we’re so interconnected, we condition each other way more than we imagine. Besides the internet, all the age-old influencers who naturally have a say in everyone’s life are there, too –  immediate family, your partner, close friends.

Be it deliberate pressure from others towards a specific direction or more subtle conditioning influencing our subconscious, we unavoidably take in numerous influences that can distort our own goals. That’s why choosing to be the only one in charge of goal-setting in your life is crucial for fulfilment.

What happens to many of us before we make this conscious decision is we start doing things not because we want to, but because of potential positive response from whoever we unconsciously desire to comply with (as with parents) or impress (as with the opposite sex and friends).

This desire to pursue what someone else might take off their hat for is nothing but our natural need for approval. It’s okay to want to be accepted by mom, your partner, your colleagues, your peers. But it’s not okay to give up your life and the precious time you have on Earth to do whatever it takes to please or impress others. You will be much happier from achieving something that will impress YOU.

Because if you allow yourself to chase someone else’s dreams that in reality mean nothing to you, you will feel empty. Instead of working little by little for what has meaning for you, you would be adding up zeroes hoping they could make up one – the one achievement that truly fulfils you.

Achievement of any big dream is a marathon, and you can only last if you see a worthy prize at the end. You’re the one who does the running, so be the one who consciously chooses the destination, too. Everyone else has their own race to run, and at the end of the day they don’t care about yours. Only you do.

So, choose your own prize and work towards it!

Enjoy your journey!
