Try this for a smooth transition from reflection to action

A period of quiet reflection is helpful for personal growth, but not so much if it prevents you from moving forward. Here’s a way to get back to action, gently.

A period of quiet reflection is helpful for personal growth, but not so much if it prevents you from moving forward. Here’s a way to get back to action, gently.

Life goes in cycles, and to wrap up each of them we go into a lull – a period of time from a few weeks to a few months where we’re done doing, so we’re just observing everything our previous actions in this cycle have brought us – people, circumstances and feelings.

This period of pause is crucial not only to recuperate and generate more energy for the next phase, but also to learn from our experiences. Without stopping to think we’re likely to get stuck running in one hamster wheel for a few more cycles – and that’s definitely not what we want to spend our precious time on.

So, how do you move on after a prolonged period of reflection? Try the “Today!” rule. It will help you generate quick wins every day to feel motivated to start moving again.

It works like this: whatever you feel inclined to postpone for tomorrow, you do today. What have you been putting off lately? Laundry? A meeting with a friend? Assembling a new portfolio to get better gigs? Most things you’ve been delaying can be moved from the “Tomorrow” folder in your head to “Today!”

Even the bigger goals like making it as a designer after a long career in accounting have little steps you can do today. You can sign up for an advanced class to brush up your skill. Or you can create a playlist of essential YouTube tutorials to do the brushing up on your own. Or you can register on a couple of websites with daily ads for freelance design jobs. All these things can be done today.

Don’t wait until you know the whole way to your seemingly far away goal – knowing the next step is all you need for now. Take it!

Of course, the “Today!” rule will only help you if you’re ready to move again after the closure of the last chapter. If you feel like you still need more time to recuperate, by all means take it. But when you want to go forward to the new cycle, you know how to start – by taking baby steps. Today!

Enjoy your journey!
